25TH INTERNATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE & LIGHTSHIP WEEKEND

Moray Firth Amateur Radio Society will be activating Covesea Skerries Lighthouse on the 20th and 21st of August as part of the International Lighthouse and Lightships Weekend. Using GB0CSL they will be on the HF bands using SSB between 10am and 4pm each day. Confirmed QSOs will be able to receive a special QSL card. Visitors to the station, which is located in the base of the lighthouse, are welcome. See qrz.com.

GM4DMA

The biographical film,  being shown at selected cinemas in the UK, about Sir Ran Fiennes’ life, Explorer, has a fair number of clips of HF radio operations. Included within the clips are Laurence KL7L (GM4DMA when he and his late wife (also licenced – callsign?) were based in Aberdeenshire). Indeed WoSARS was fortunate to have a talk by Laurence in the early 80’s as to the equipment used for HF communications; the mainstay of many of their expeditions from the early 70s to the 2000s. The trailer for the film has a short CW message to be decoded.

WoSARS SHACK

Up in the Kilpatrick Hills, west of Glasgow a serious leak has developed in the Club’s operating Shack. A team of volunteers had been assembled for yesterday (9th)  under Ernie – GM0EZP’s directions to tackle the problem.  Fortunately a day of good wx was chosen to aid in the repair.

MUSEUM OF COMMUNICATIONS

An exhibition to mark the centenary of the first scheduled radio broadcasts in the UK and the birth of the BBC – the world’s oldest national broadcaster continues till the end of September. It charts the first 100 years of scheduled broadcasting in Britain, with a timeline highlighting famous Radio and TV programmes and events, illustrated by items from our collection, from crystal set radios and valve wirelesses to TV cameras.  Recalling great moments in broadcasting history, events of the day and other memorabilia from their collection including celebrating Royal Broadcasting in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year. James (Jim) Bertram, GM0GMN has been involved in amateur radio since he was a teenager when he first joined the RSGB. He is very active on HF, VHF and UHF with a particular interest in HF DX and DMR. James is also the Secretary of The International Police Association Radio Club, which has more than 100 members. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List

On Saturday the 25th of June, Lomond Radio Club will be operating GB2LEE from the Tall Ship Glenlee located at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow. Glenlee is the last remaining 3-masted Clydebuilt ship still afloat in the UK. SPECIAL EVENT

GB2JCM will be operated by the James Clerk Maxwell Radio Society to commemorate the anniversary of the mathematician and scientist’s birth on the 13th of June. They will operate from the Church at Parton in Dumfries & Galloway where Clerk Maxwell both worshipped and is buried.
