A sad note as we have to report the passing of Bill Miller, GM3PMB (founder of Prestwick Circuits – now dissolved) who passed away in Ayr Hospital. Bill was a long serving member of the RSGB . He was admitted to hospital a few days ago with breathing difficulties. His father,   GM5VG (Bill Senior – CHAIRMAN & GENERAL MANAGER OF ROLLS ROYCE – Scotland) was a well ‘kent’ VHF experimenter and member of the RSGB Group (RSG) & GLASGOW AMATEUR RADIO & DISTRICT in the 1950’s, and The Radio Club of Scotland (RCS) in the 1960’s. We send our condolences to his family at this sad time.

GM4DMA (‘LIVING DAGEROUSLY’ SIR RAN FIENNES LIFE – EXPLORER)

This coming Tuesday (18th), at Then Eden Theatre Inverness, this biographical film is being shown about Sir Ran Fiennes’ life, the explorer. Included in the film there are a fair number of clips of HF radio operations, and within the clips are Laurence KL7L (GM4DMA when he and his previouos wife – also licenced, were based in Aberdeenshire). Indeed, WoSARS was fortunate to have a talk by Laurence in the early 80’s as to the equipment used for HF communications; the mainstay of many of their expeditions from the early 70s to the 2000s. The trailer for the film has a short CW message to be decoded. ABW Laurence hopes to attend and meet up with Ran. see CALENDAR for further information.

Aberdeen Amateur Radio Society is taking part in the International Lighthouses and Lightship Weekend today, the 21st.

Likewise, Inverness & District Amateur Radio Society is taking part today.

Also the Moray Firth Amateur Radio Society will be activating Covesea Skerries Lighthouse today as part of the International Lighthouse and Lightships Weekend. Using GB0CSL they will be on the HF bands using SSB between 10am and 4pm each day. Confirmed QSOs will be able to receive a special QSL card. GM4DMA

The biographical film,  being shown at selected cinemas in the UK, about Sir Ran Fiennes’ life, Explorer, has a fair number of clips of HF radio operations. Included within the clips are Laurence KL7L (GM4DMA when he and his late wife (also licenced – callsign?) were based in Aberdeenshire). Indeed WoSARS was fortunate to have a talk by Laurence in the early 80’s as to the equipment used for HF communications; the mainstay of many of their expeditions from the early 70s to the 2000s. The trailer for the film has a short CW message to be decoded.

MINI DXPEDITIONS FOR EVERYONE

On Thursday, Stirling Amateur Radio Society is having a talk by Billy McFarland, GM6DX on his recently released RSGB book Mini DXpeditions for Everyone. The talk is titled The reason, the writing, the detail. The meeting is at the Club House, 68 Bandeath Industrial Estate, Throsk FK7 7XY at 7.30pm.

The Tuesday evening Morse practice session with Glenrothes & District Radio Club has ceased for the Summer break. It will resume at 7.15pm on the 23rd of August on 145.425MHz FM. SPECIAL EVENT

GB2JCM will be operated by the James Clerk Maxwell Radio Society to commemorate the anniversary of the mathematician and scientist’s birth on the 13th of June. They will operate from the Church at Parton in Dumfries & Galloway where Clerk Maxwell both worshipped and is buried. Should you be interested in joining with the society and taking part in the special event, please come along on the day between 9am and 5pm. They can be contacted via QRZ.com.
