SNIPS – News For Scotland – 3rd March

We start this section with a reminder of the very sad news that Ian McPhedran, GM3GTQ passed away two weeks ago. We send our condolences to his family at this sad time. Ian was lately a member of the West of Scotland Amateur Radio Society and a regular participant in the net following the 10.00 am GB2RS News Sunday broadcasts in the Glasgow Area. Funeral Arrangements are confirmed as this Tuesday, the 5th of March at 11.30am at Clydebank Crematorium.

A reminder that tomorrow’s Tonight@8 (6th March) webinar covers the subject of VHF National Field Day from both the organisers viewpoint and the Lothians Radio Society having fun in participating as a contestant.

FUTHER NEWS

DISTANCE LEARNING

The Bath Based Distance Learning team has helped over a thousand students to pass UK amateur radio exams with pass rates consistently above the national average. The next Intermediate course will run from January to May 2024. Students will receive weekly work packages via a virtual classroom. There will be no charge for the training, but students will need to provide their own textbook, scientific calculator, electronic parts and tool kit. Students will also have to arrange their own exam at the end of the course, but advice will be provided at the appropriate time. As part of the application process, there will be some pre-course work to ensure students are able to use the online learning systems and to be sure they are ready to study in January. ‘JUNK’ SALE

Moray Firth Amateur Radio Society is holding its Autumn Surplus Equipment Sale this coming Saturday at Roseisle Village Hall, Elgin. The venue will open at 9am for sellers and 11am for the public. GM uW ROUND TABLE

The 2023 Scottish Microwave Round Table GMRT, is taking place between 10.30am and 5pm on Saturday the 11th of November at the Museum of Communication, Burntisland, Fife in Scotland. There are still places available to book. An interesting programme of speakers has been arranged and microwave test facilities will be provided. There will also be opportunities to purchase components and microwave-related items. The cost is £12 and this includes a buffet lunch. A dinner will be held in the evening at a local hotel. “…….. Sad news that Raymond Kemp, GM0KQB has become a silent key. Ray had not been active for a few years due to family illness and his own terminal Fibrosis. He leaves a wife, Helen and a son, Andrew. He was a coppersmith by trade and was also a talented musician and played in a number of local bands. His favourite radio mode was CW. He was an early member of Stirling and District Amateur Radio Society before it moved to Bandeath Estate ………………..”

The next RSGB live Tonight@8 webinar will take place at 8pm on Monday the 3rd of July, with Eric P. Nichols, KL7AJ presenting “Receiving antennas are different”. Eric, who has written numerous amateur radio and electronics articles over the past 30 years, says that almost every ham radio station can benefit from a separate receiving antenna. Effective receiving antennas are optimised for best signal-to-noise ratio, not necessarily the greatest gain. BRAEHEAD RALLY

The ASRA Braehead Rally is taking place today, Sunday the 14th of May. The venue is Braehead Arena Foyer, 150 Kings Inch Road, Renfrew G51 4BN. Free parking is available. RADIO QUESTION & ANSWER NIGHT ON ZOOM

On Sundays, Kilmarnock and Loudoun Amateur Radio Club has an SSB net on 3.720MHz from 2pm, followed by a quiz on 145.475MHz from 7.45pm. MORSE PRACTICE

Michael, GM5AUG has a new 80m GB2CW transmission on Sundays at 7.30pm around 3555kHz. This is intended for anyone who wishes to learn CW, at any level. Following the transmission, feedback for students will be available via Zoom.

The net is open to anyone, within range, who has any radio-related issues and needs assistance or guidance. This is a peer-support net, the aim of which is to provide support to fellow amateurs. On Saturday the 22nd of April, George, will be holding a support group from 6.30pm until 8.30pm at Wild Crest Park Community Room, Brewery Road, Wooler NE71 6QG. This group is open to anyone with an interest in radio, be they licensed amateurs, those self-studying for their first or next licence, or shortwave listeners.
