NEW EXHIBITION FOR 2022 CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF BROADCASTING – Museum Of Communications (MOC)

After the two-year enforced closure of the Burntisland based MOC museum, we are  planning to open a new free public exhibition from May.  The exhibition will mark an important anniversary in the history of radio and TV broadcasting.

In 2022, British broadcasting has entered its centenary year, marking both 100 years since the first experimental scheduled broadcasts were made in the UK and the start of the BBC – the world’s oldest national broadcaster. It will also register our  presence back in the community and  town etc.

The Museum’s 2022 exhibition will be in  131 on the High Street of Burntisland (KY3 9AA). The exhibition will feature a 100 year Broadcasting timeline running from 1922 to 2022 highlighting famous radio and TV programmes and events illustrated by items from our collection- crystal set radios, valve wirelesses to TV cameras, recalling the great moments in broadcasting history, events of the day and other memorabilia. Hopefully we can set up a broadcast demonstration for young people to enjoy and illustrate some of the technical aspects of the history of broadcasting. We also want to show how broadcasting has evolved into today’s world of on-line streaming, smart-phones and HDTV.  There will be an additional exhibit covering Royal Broadcasting in this Queens Platinum Jubilee year.

Everyone will be welcome to come in to see the exhibition – normally on Wednesdays and Saturdays over May to September. There will be no charge for entrance to the exhibition. The museum is a registered charity and run only by  volunteers. WoSARS Members see POST#1978 . for further information.

GB100 2MT (‘Two-Emma-Toc’) marking the Centenary of British Broadcasting – Special Event station 14th February Only!!!

(EDIT (COX) 14th – See POST#1946 . (TDX & COX work them at Writtle))

On 14th February 1922 the Marconi Company began to broadcast a five-minute program of speech and music within the weekly half-hour calibration transmission. The broadcasts were made weekly on Tuesday made using the callsign 2MT from an ex-army hut in the village of Writtle near Chelmsford. Initially, the station had only 200 Watts and transmitted on 700m (428 kHz) using an inverted-L antenna.

The enthusiastic team, led by Captain Peter Eckersley, assembled their transmitter together with a gramophone player, microphone, and on occasions a piano from the local public house, to entertain listeners. The regular announcement; “This is Two Emma Toc, Writtle testing, Writtle testing”, became quite well known.

This was the first regular wireless broadcast for entertainment in the UK and its success provided the foundation for the formation of the BBC later in 1922.

Members of Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society (CARS) will operate a special event station to commemorate this historic event. A special callsign, GB100-2MT, is active during February – and on 14th February will operate from Writtle, close to where the original broadcasts were made. Operating will be on HF, as well as locally on VHF/UHF.

QSOs will be confirmed on LOTW and eQSL. Sorry no QSL cards, or bureau.

Sad news. Longstanding WoSARS and RCS Member Tommy, GM3VBT (Logan) is now a silent key (SK – 24th January).  Though not able to attend the Club’s meetings for the last couple of years due to Covid restrictions and failing health, members were kept aware of how he was faring via amateur and family sources. With the Club meetings having resumed, he will be sadly missed on a Friday night both at Rose Street and down at the ‘pub’ (The Bon Accord) afterwards. His funeral will be held on 7th February at 11.30 am, Clydebank Crematorium. All are welcome to attend.
