25TH INTERNATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE & LIGHTSHIP WEEKEND
Aberdeen Amateur Radio Society is taking part in the International Lighthouses and Lightship Weekend today, the 21st.
Likewise, Inverness & District Amateur Radio Society is taking part today.
Also the Moray Firth Amateur Radio Society will be activating Covesea Skerries Lighthouse today as part of the International Lighthouse and Lightships Weekend. Using GB0CSL they will be on the HF bands using SSB between 10am and 4pm each day. Confirmed QSOs will be able to receive a special QSL card. The biographical film, being shown at selected cinemas in the UK, about Sir Ran Fiennes’ life, Explorer, has a fair number of clips of HF radio operations. Included within the clips are Laurence KL7L (GM4DMA when he and his late wife (also licenced – callsign?) were based in Aberdeenshire). Indeed WoSARS was fortunate to have a talk by Laurence in the early 80’s as to the equipment used for HF communications; the mainstay of many of their expeditions from the early 70s to the 2000s. The trailer for the film has a short CW message to be decoded.

Essex Ham have made available training material related to the Syllabus v1.5 changes which take effect soon
The new v1.5 syllabus kicks in from September 1 this year.
The group have now released updated slides for Modules 4 (Feeders & Antennas) and Module 6 (Licence Conditions).
For the last few months, the online course has included a video on how to complete an EMF assessment – that is now made available to tutors.
Also available are some sample mock questions and a one-page PDF guide for newcomers covering EMF.

In March 1942 the first sorties of the AVRO Lancaster aircraft took place. This commemorative event for Lancaster aircraft is being simultaneously partnered in the UK by callsign GB80LAN; and, in Canada by callsign VE80LAN organised by Hamilton Amateur Radio Club, and Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and, in Australia by callsign VK80LAN organised by the Western Australian VHF Group. They want to commemorate those involved with the Lancaster.
Also of interest, is that the Lincoln Short Wave Club will be operating GB6IBC from the International Bomber Command Memorial on 5th March 2022.
Unusually Ofcom has given permission for the call to be used at several different locations. Currently confirmed operations will take place from the three active RAF Station Amateur Radio Clubs at RAF Waddington, RAF Cosford and RAF Halton. Also the call will be on the air from ex RAF East Kirkby which is now the home of the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre and Lancaster “Just Jane”.

In Australia, the WA VHF Group requested for the special event call sign VK80LAN to be available through March. VK80LAN hopes to be operating from the radio room in the Lancaster Bomber at the RAAFA Aviation Heritage Museum in Bull Creek, a suburb of Perth. A roster of operators wishing to take advantage of operating the special event callsign during the month is being drawn up.
